No state loves animals more than Wyoming. In fact, 72 percent of households in the Cowboy State own a pet, according to an American Veterinary Medical Association study published in Buckrail.

Wyoming's rate of animal ownership is 15 percentage points above the national average and nearly 30 percentage points higher than Rhode Island, where only 45% of households have a pet. West Virginia followed Wyoming with an animal ownership rate of 71%. Nebraska, Vermont, and Idaho rounded out the top five states for pet owners. Colorado was tied for eighth place.

Dogs remain the most popular pets in the country. Just over 38 percent of households nationwide own a dog. Another 25 percent of American households have a cat, with an increasing percentage of families who keep chickens, fish, lizards, rabbits, snakes, and other exotic animals.
