Wyoming Equality has released a statement on the announcement of an action plan by Laramie County School District#1 in response to events at McCormick Junior High School in Cheyenne over the past few weeks.

Racist and anti-gay flyers were posted at the school several weeks ago, and an investigation by the district found some bullying and harassment of students had occurred and the school officials had not always implemented district policies in response to the bullying.

The district has announced an action plan that will include district-wide training on the reporting and investigation of bullying and harassment as well as a review of district policies. At least two community meeting will also be held on the action plan, with the first to take place on May 23. That meeting will be facilitated by the federal Department of Justice. The second meeting in late June will be led by students with help from F.E.Warren Air Force Base.

Wyoming Equality Executive Director Sara Burlingame released the following statement on Friday:

"Wyoming Equality is encouraged by the Action Plan proposed by the school district; it is student lead and supported by a really diverse group of community leaders, from Warren AFB, the Boys and Girls Club, our organization (Wyoming Equality) and the NAACP among others. There is a lot to be excited about with this plan-it represents what happens when we put out heads together and prioritize our children."
