EPA Warns Wyoming’s Smoky Air is Unhealthy in Many Areas
The EPA and National Weather Service are warning residents of Wyoming to be cautious of unhealthy air quality because of the amount of smoke in the air. This includes the cities of Casper, Cheyenne and Laramie, as well as others.
At an Unhealthy Air Quality rating, everyone may begin to experience some adverse health effects. Those in sensitive groups can experience them sooner and greater.

Airnow.gov warns the dangers from smoke may affect the following populations greatly:
- People with heart or lung disease, such as heart failure, angina, ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema or asthma.
- Older adults, which makes them more likely to have heart or lung disease than younger people.
- Children, including teenagers, because their respiratory systems are still developing, they breathe more air (and air pollution) per pound of body weight than adults, they’re more likely to be active outdoors, and they’re more likely to have asthma.
- People with diabetes, because they are more likely to have underlying cardiovascular disease.
- People with diabetes, because they are more likely to have underlying cardiovascular disease.
- Pregnant women, because there could be potential health effects for both the individual and the developing fetus.
During periods of unhealthy air quality, the EPA recommends residents to spend more time indoors. Residents should also avoid using flame heat sources and run an air purifier or air conditioner when available. See more recommendations here.
