Just in time for New Year's Eve, here's a sobering statistic. Wyoming has the highest rate of deadly DUI accidents in America.

In 2017, Wyoming registered 7.59 impaired driving deaths for every 100,000 people, according to the Safewise study. Wyoming was also the only state that increased its rate of DUI-related fatalities. In 2016, the Cowboy State ranked eighth nationwide, with 5.98 drunk driving deaths per 100,000 people.

South Carolina finished second in the study, trailing Wyoming with 6.23 alcohol-related traffic fatalities per 100,000. North Dakota, New Mexico, and Alabama round out the five deadliest states for drunk drivers.

The study noted that Wyoming is one of few states with no minimum jail time or mandatory treatment programs for first-time offenders. DUI fines in Wyoming are also well below the national average.
