A new Groupon study claims the Cowboy State is one of the worst places in the country for beer lovers. Wyoming ranked 41st nationwide, based on affordability, beer culture, and the quality of local breweries.

On the bright side, beer is relatively cheap in Wyoming, which ranked 20th for the average cost of a 12 oz. beer at bars and liquor stores. The Cowboy State finished 41st for the number of beer-related events.

Here's where it gets sketchy.

The study claims the quality score is a composite of reviews from the five most popular craft beers in each state. Wyoming ranked 41st? Really? 41st?

When it comes to craft beer, Wyoming is short on quantity but long on quality. Several Cowboy State breweries have won medals at the Great American Beer Festival, including Altitude Chophouse and Brewery in Laramie, Jackson's Melvin Brewery and Snake River Brewing Company, Saratoga's Snowy Mountain Brewery, and Sheridan's Black Tooth Brewing (that's the short list).

California was ranked as the best state for beer lovers, followed by Colorado, Michigan, Illinois, and Massachusetts. Around the region, Nebraska was 25th, Idaho was 30th, Montana was 35th, while Utah and South Dakota finished just behind Wyoming in 42nd and 43rd place, respectively.

North Dakota ranked last in the study with Hawaii, Kansas, Alaska, and New Mexico rounding out the five worst states for beer lovers.
