Randy Houser kept traditional country alive and rocking at his New York City tour stop last Wednesday (Dec. 11), with a little help from surprise guest Miranda Lambert. During his Webster Hall set, Houser invited Lambert to the stage, and the two revisited Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn's iconic 1971 duet, "After the Fire is Gone." Penned by singer-songwriter L.E. White, "After the Fire is Gone" was the first of many duets recorded by one of country's most iconic duos. The song is included on the track list of We Only Make Believe, the first album Lynn and Twitty released together, and went on to reach the top spot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Its popularity helped pave the way for such classic collaborations as "Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man," "As Soon as I Hang Up the Phone," "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" and many more unforgettable Lynn and Twitty duets.

Lambert is no stranger to the song: She has previously performed "After the Fire is Gone" during live shows with fellow country star Dierks Bentley. An avowed fan of classic country,   she has also consistently proved her affinity for the male-female duet format, most recently teaming with Jason Aldean for his 2018 hit, "Drowns the Whiskey."

For his part, Houser has spent 2019 touring and performing the songs on his most recent studio album, January's Magnolia. A powerful, searching album that turns away from the more commercial inflections that marked previous stages of his career, Magnolia re-focuses on the kind of stylistic leanings that first drew Houser to country music in the first place.

In keeping with that goal, Houser has surrounded himself with long-time friends and fellow artists that he admires. In addition to teaming with Lambert in New York City, he hit the road with Americana heavyweight Paul Cauthen for his fall 2019 Magnolia Tour.
