Firefighters Mopping Up Horse Creek Fire, About 6600 Acres Burned

The Director of Cheyenne-Laramie County Emergency Management says firefighters will likely remain on the scene of a large grass fire in the Horse Creek area near Cheyenne through the weekend, mopping up remnants of the blaze.

Jeanine West says about 6600 acres were burned in the blaze, the cause of which has yet to be determined. She says three structures were badly damaged in the blaze, with another 60 properties suffering more minor damage, often consisting simply of some grass being burned.

Mandatory evacuations of homes in the area of the fire which were ordered early Friday afternoon were lifted last evening. West says every firefighting agency in the Cheyenne area responded to the fire as did other agencies from around the region. But as of 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, she did not have an exact number for the firefighters who battled the blaze.
