Cheyenne Man Caught on Camera Burglarizing Garage, Police Say

A 35-year-old Cheyenne man is facing felony charges after he was reportedly caught on camera burglarizing a garage in north central Cheyenne.

According to arrest records, James Edward Carrera was taken into custody on a warrant at 4:49 p.m. on Friday, June 7, after a Laramie County Sheriff's deputy spotted him in the 1600 block of Central Avenue.

The deputy says the warrant was for failure to appear on an original charge of misdemeanor theft and was signed by Laramie County Circuit Court Judge Sean Chambers on May 30, 2024.

Then shortly before midnight, police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Oxford Drive for reports of a past burglary.

Footage Leads to Felony Charges for Cheyenne Man

Police say they viewed footage showing Carrera carrying a backpack containing bolt cutters and a sledgehammer.

Carrera was also reportedly seen on the footage cutting a security camera wire and stealing multiple tools from the garage.

Police say a witness told them Carrera stole items from the garage and pawned them at a pawn shop.

On Monday afternoon, the Laramie County District Attorney's Office charged Carrera with burglary, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both, and possession of burglar's tools, a felony punishable by up to three years in prison, up to a $3,000 fine, or both.

He's scheduled to appear in Circuit Court at 9:45 a.m. tomorrow, June 11.

JUNE 11 UPDATE:

Carrera was seen in Circuit Court Tuesday morning. His total bond was set at $3,500 cash ($500 in the theft case and $3,000 in the burglary case) and his arraignment and preliminary hearing were scheduled for June 17 at 9:30 a.m.
