Two Boys Hit By Car At Cheyenne Crosswalk Suffer Minor Injuries
Two male students at Rossman Elementary School in Cheyenne suffered minor injuries after being hit by a car at a crosswalk near the school on Monday morning, according to a spokesman for the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
But Aaron Brown said the incident should serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilant driving in school zones, adding that the incident ''could have been much worse."
Motorist Says Blinding Sun Was A Problem
Brown says the collision occurred at about 8:06 a.m. when a motorist was turning from Walterscheid Boulevard on to West College Drive. Two boys, ages 11 and 8, were crossing West College in a crosswalk and were hit by the motorist, who fortunately was traveling at only 10-15 miles per hour. Brown says the motorist, who was not identified by the patrol, told investigators they were blinded by the sun and could not see the boys in the crosswalk..
The boys parents took them to the hospital, were it was determined that they had suffered only minor scrapes. Brown says the driver was cited for failure to yield.
''This could have been much worse'' Brown said on Monday afternoon. ''It should serve as a reminder that motorists need to be extra careful in school zones and double check when making turns near a crosswalk."
Sadly, not all such collisions cause such relatively light injuries. Four years ago this month, 13-year-old Makili ''Mak" Evans was killed when he was hit by a motorist while in a crosswalk at McCormick Junior High School in Cheyenne.
Rossman is located at 916 West College drive. Walterscheid Boulevard is a north-south road which lies adjacent to the east side of the school.
