Russell Wilson Released As Denver Broncos Quarterback

It's crazy to think that just two years ago, almost to the day, it was announced that the Denver Broncos had pulled off one of the largest blockbuster trades in history, and landed Super Bowl Champion Quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks.

The amount of capital that it took to land Russ in Denver all seemed worth it at the time. The players, the draft picks, it didn't matter. After floundering since Peyton Manning retired after Super Bowl 50, we finally had our guy. So we thought...

Why Didn't Russell Wilson Work Out In Denver?

Under the leadership of then Broncos Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett, Russ had his worst season ever as an NFL starter. Sadly, even in his 2nd year under veteran Head Coach Sean Payton, Russ, while showing improvement, still struggled with the boys in orange & blue.

After being benched at the end of last season, the rumors of Russell Wilson's impending departure from the team have come true today, as the Denver Broncos have informed Russ of their intentions to release him when the new league year begins on March 13th.

Denver Broncos Inform Russell Wilson Of His Release

In a joint statement from GM George Paton & Head Coach Sean Payton, they said:

"We spoke with Russell Wilson today to inform him of his release after the start of the league year. On behalf of the Broncos, we thank Russell for his contributions and dedication to our team and community while wishing him the best as he continues his career.

"As we move forward, we are focused on building the strongest team possible for the 2024 season and beyond. We are excited to improve this offseason and will have the flexibility to get better through the draft and free agency."

It was clear as the season went on that Russell wasn't Sean's guy, and as badly as us Broncos fans wanted it to work, it just wasn't going to. Russ did himself no favors on former Bronco Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall's Podcast last week either.

While speaking with Marshall, Russ was very candid about the benching process from last season, and quite frankly it wasn't a good look at the organization which likely helped speed the process of separation. Russ said he wanted to stay in Denver and win two Super Bowls here. But these actions, even though completely in his rights to do so, didn't align with how he spoke.

Russell Wilson's time in Denver might go down as one of the biggest busts in franchise history, and it truly is too bad that it didn't go as we all hoped it would when he came to Denver two years ago.
