Changes Ahead for Wyoming High School Hoops, but NIL Still on Hold
The first Wyoming High School Activities Association Board of Directors meeting was last week. Two decisions will have an impact on the future of high school sports in Wyoming, while no discussion on a third topic means the status quo remains. Name, Image, and Likeness is not coming to Wyoming just yet for prep student-athletes. Changes are coming to the classifications for high school basketball in 2026-27, and nothing is on the horizon for football.
WHSAA SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING RECAP 2025
WHSAA Commissioner Trevor Wilson visited with David Settle from WyoPreps about NIL, the restructuring of basketball, and no movement in football.
Wilson explained how the NIL proposal that passed last spring was defeated after more conversation around Wyoming. He still believes it’s just a matter of time before something official will be adopted.
Based on enrollment numbers that came in during the summer for the next reclassification cycle, the WHSAA will make changes to how many schools are in the four classes of basketball. The enrollment breakdown would make it 14 schools in 4A, 16 in 3A, 11 in 2A, and 29 in 1A. You read that correctly, 29 in 1A. That creates numerous issues, Wilson said. The WHSAA created a proposal of 16, 16, 18, and 20. It passed on first reading last week and will be voted on again in November.

Another topic that has drawn a lot of discussion amongst fans is competitiveness in football, and should something different be done? Wilson said there’s been zero discussion since a few ideas were proposed last spring.
Lastly, Wilson reviewed how the first two state championships of the fall season went and what’s ahead over the next four weeks.
