Firing Squad A Possibility For Wyoming Executions
The state of Wyoming is a capitol punishment state, meaning that we’re a state of execution by means of lethal injections, but what if we run out of those lethal drugs to execute a prisoner? Or what if, for whatever reason, lethal injection is ruled, on a case-by-case basis, unconstitutional? What's the next option?
Senator Bruce Burns of Sheridan, WY wants the state to consider a different means of execution: death by firing squad! The reason why he suggested it is because several states, including Wyoming, that use lethal injection as their means of capitol punishment are running short of the lethal drug. And like Wyoming, those states also have to find an alternative method of executive. Senator Burns said that the state law currently calls for using a gas chamber if lethal injection is unavailable. Only problems is, Wyoming doesn’t have a gas chamber!
The Senator also made a statement saying that he feels that building a gas chamber would be impractical, not to mention expensive, and he feels that using this method is cruel and unusual. So naturally he chose thefiring squad because Utah uses this method.
He also said that a firing squad is probably going to be the cheapest route... and judging how often the gas chamber would be used (the last personexecuted in Wyoming was way back in 1992, and there’s currently only one prisoner on death row), it's a waste of time and resources to have anything more technical.
Some feel that death by firing squad would also be a cruel and unusual punishment. What say you--do you think it would be right to use a firing squad to execute someone if lethal injection is not available?
