Texas singer-songwriter Elaina Kay is premiering her new song "Saint" exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to listen.

Using the classic dichotomy of sinners and saints, Kay's "Saint" examines the end of a toxic relationship. She sings about the kind of love-gone-wrong that's no longer worth the effort: "I'm tired of tryin' to make you want to stay / I know if I try to leave, you'd let me walk away," Kay sings in the song's striking chorus. "I'm on my last prayer to try to make you feel the same / But I'm not a rebel, and you're not a saint."

According to Kay, writing "Saint" meant laying bare some of her most intense personal pain: "I had never been so desperate and vulnerable while writing," she tells The Boot.

"Anyone who has been in a toxic relationship can relate to this tune about hanging on by a thread and trying to make it work with the wrong person just to avoid another 'failed' relationship," Kay adds.

Based in Dallas and a native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Kay grew up on a ranch, raising cows and cutting horses, and then was a member of the rodeo team at Tarleton State University. She later moved to Nashville to pursue music before moving back to Texas, where she found more job opportunities and a thriving music scene.

In August, Kay will release her debut album, Issues, a rollicking and self-assured record produced by fellow Texan Paul Cauthen and recorded at Dallas' Modern Electric Recording Studio alongside the Texas Gentlemen. It's set for release on Aug. 2; fans can visit ElainaKay.com for more details.
