Average Wyoming Adult Lives 44 Miles Away From Their Mom

Just in time for Mother's Day, here's a fun fact. When they grow up, most kids will stay close to home. One study claims that the average adult in Wyoming lives 44 miles away from their mom.

Adult children in the mountain west are more likely to move far away from their parents than any other region. In Mississippi, the average adult child lives only six miles away from mom. Children also stay close to their parents in New York and Pennsylvania, where the average distance between homes is eight miles. The national average is 18 miles.

Only 20 percent of adults nationwide live more than a two-hour drive away from their mother, according to the study. In rural states like Wyoming, many young adults are moving further away from home to pursue economic opportunities in other areas. Research indicates that families with lower incomes are more likely to stay close to home and often become caregivers for their elderly parents.

Although adult children in Wyoming typically live further away from mom compared to other states, at least most of them actually move out of the house. The Cowboy State has the second-lowest percentage of adult children who live with their parents. "Only" 22 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 34 in Wyoming still live at home, according to a 2018 study.
