A Pink Moon will be in full view over the skies of Wyoming throughout this weekend and by 'full', we mean a Full Pink Moon. However, while the full moon will be viewable, don't freak out if you don't see it turn pink, because it's really not supposed to.

The 'Pink Moon' is given its name due to the association with the native pink wildflower of North American, also known as the Phlox subulata plant. This, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac.

However, the moon will be full so whatever things that you associate full moons with, be aware of those. Unfortunately, this Pink Moon will not be a 'Supermoon'. This has been the case in the past two years, but will not be for this year. As CNN World reports, the Old Farmer's Almanac says, "A full moon in April brings frost. If the full moon rises pale, expect rain." This pretty much assures that we won't get a pale full moon since Wyoming never gets rain (that's a joke). But seriously, we just never get rain.

Of course, there will be plenty of other moon events happening throughout the year as well:

  • May 16: Flower moon
  • June 14: Strawberry moon
  • July 13: Buck moon
  • August 11: Sturgeon moon
  • September 10: Harvest moon
  • October 9: Hunter's moon
  • November 8: Beaver moon
  • December 7: Cold moon

We're also getting two lunar eclipses. Those are when the moon passes in the Earth's shadow. We'll see one on May 15th into May 16, then one on November 8th.

In Wyoming especially, moon events like a Pink Moon can be fun to see and are very visible since we don't have a lot of obstruction that bigger cities might see. So as the 'Star Gazer' on PBS would always say to end his show, "Keep your feet on the ground and keep looking up!" It's corny, but not bad advice. Enjoy the Pink Moon, Wyoming!
