Cheyenne and Laramie County law enforcement agencies have joined forces to raise awareness of school crosswalk safety, according to a release from Laramie County Sheriff Brian Kozak.

The release says that on Monday, January 30, law enforcement will be in nearly every school zone in Laramie County between 7;15 and 8:15 a.m.

While there, law enforcement vehicles will turn on their emergency lights to raise awareness of school zone safety. The release says that in addition to the sheriff's office, the Cheyenne Police Department, Pine Bluffs Police Department, and Wyoming Highway Patrol will join in the effort.

Kozak also says he and other local law enforcement will join Janelle Jones, founder of #For Mak as she assumes crosswalk duties at McCormick Junior High School. Jones is the mother of Mak Evans, a McCormick student who was killed when he was struck by a car as he was in a crosswalk near the school in November of 2021.

Jones has made it her mission to improve crosswalk safety in the Cheyenne area.

Kozak says he wants to remind people to:

  • Slow down around schools
  • Cross only at designated crosswalks
  • Educate children about the dangers of distraction
  • Never text while driving
  • Always expect the unexpected around schools
