I'm not a guy who is known to have crazy dreams, but when I do, I'm freaked out for days. I'm also not a person who would rush to a dream doctor every time I have one of these vivid dreams, but sometimes I wish I had one on speed dial to help me analyze them when they are extra wild.

I'm an early riser, not an early-to-bed person. My morning begins between 1 and 2 am, so bedtime is between 5 and 6 pm. That means it's an early-bird dinner, and wind down for bed.

When I have a dream that freaks me out, I'll stay awake for the rest of the night trying to analyze it. Well, when you wake up at 8:03 pm, the night becomes long and the day becomes longer. So, I need to put the lost sleep time to good use, so off to Google I go to research the dream.

If someone were to check my search history, they'd be shocked to find a search for:

What does a dream about spilled macaroni salad mean?

Yep, I had a nightmare where I spilled a massive amount of macaroni salad at an event I was attending. When I woke, my heart was racing, and I used my phone's flashlight to look for the spilled macaroni salad.

According to Sleepfoundation.org, dreams are mental, emotional, or sensory experiences that are most common during REM sleep when the brain's activity increases.

Dreams are one of the most fascinating and mystifying aspects of sleep. Since Sigmund Freud helped draw attention to the potential importance of dreams in the late 19th century, considerable research has worked to unravel both the neuroscience and psychology of dreams.

Despite this advancing scientific knowledge, there is much that remains unknown about both sleep and dreams. Even the most fundamental question — why do we dream at all? — is still subject to significant debate.

The central place I turned to for researching my dream was the Dream Dictionary.  Not only will it break down what specific topics you're dreaming about, but it also gives you other options to really take a deep dive into the dream subject, type of dream, and the theory behind many of these topics.

Since my dream contained macaroni salad, I went to the Dictionary section to search for food dreams.

In our dreams food becomes highly symbolic connecting us with our physical and emotional strengths and energies. Essentially you are fulfilling parts of yourself that are unconscious to you.

Food is represented in different ways in your dreams.

  • Receiving or giving food.
  • Passed loved ones are giving us food.
  • Sharing, cooking, or buying food.
  • Cooking, rotting, or buffet foods.
  • Spilling, eating, or burning foods.

Spilling food brings your attention to a careless action you are unconscious of. This might be something in your life that has been affected, but don't dwell on it.

I'm still not entirely sure what the Macaroni Salad represents, but I'm trying to be more conscious of my surroundings, hoping it will become clear to me soon.
