Newest Cowpoke Commit Turns Down Offers From Former UW Assistants

LARAMIE -- Sorry, Gordie Haug. Apologies, Tim Polasek.

Brett Singler is respectfully declining your offers to attend school in balmy, beautiful North Dakota and will instead take his talent -- and 6-foot-5, 235-pound frame -- to the warmth and sunshine of the high plains of Laramie.

The three-star product from Shiocton -- a small village in eastern Wisconsin, just a stone's throw away from Lambeau Field, where the temperature can drop to minus-25 in the winter -- didn't just turn down Wyoming's former long-time assistants in the recruiting process. He also said thanks, but no thanks, to the Cowpokes' Mountain West rival New Mexico, too.

That's not all.

Central Michigan, Kent State, Illinois State, South Dakota State and Southern Illinois were in the mix for the two-way standout, who played both tight end and rushed the quarterback from the edge.

You're not alone, North Dakota and North Dakota State.

Singler will man the trenches for Jay Sawvel and defensive tackles coach Deonte Gibson.

"Committed," he simply penned on social media, featuring a photo of himself in a full Wyoming uniform.

Singler is one of 15 prep players to give his verbal commitment to the Cowboys this summer. He's the eighth defensive member of the 2027 class, joining end Garrison Manzanarez (Cypress, Calif.), linebacker Drew Benassi (Lee's Summit, Mo.), nose tackle Kingston Beyer (Fort Worth, Texas) and secondary members  Jimmel Champion (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Freddie Burke (Parker Colo.), Karson McKenzie (Englewood, Colo.) and Cody High School star Cache McFadden.

The others are: Big Horn offensive tackle Chase Garber, Batavia, Ill., teammates Michael Vander Luitgaren (quarterback) and Thomas Prescott (tight end), wide receivers Alijah Landrum-Hamilton (Englewood, Colo.) and Levi Rillos (Arvada, Colo.) along with signal caller Tucker Ingersoll (Arvada, Colo.) and lineman Noah Reid (Mission, Kan.).

Singler recorded 67 tackles last fall, 11 of which were for loss. He also tallied 7.5 sacks, earning him the title of Defensive Lineman of the Year. He was equally as dangerous on the opposite side of the ball, snagging 46 passes for 535 yards. Seven of those grabs culminated in the end zone. He was also named a first-team all-conference tight end.

Not impressed?

All of that damage above came in just nine games.

AJ Blazek, who was briefly -- as in a-few-weeks brief -- a UW assistant, kicked the tires on Singler while he was at Wisconsin. Fellow Big Ten programs Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan State also flirted. So did Iowa State.

Sorry, AJ, who is now at Central Florida, his sixth school in a decade.

Sawvel and Co. are typically in the single digits when it comes to verbal commitments this early in the recruiting cycle during his three years on the sidelines in Laramie. Craig Bohl's decade-long tenure was no different.

Sawvel has said numerous times in the past he likes to put prospects on the sidelines for games in the fall inside War Memorial Stadium.

Wyoming's known commits have bumped the '27 class, so far, up to 98th nationally out of 138 FBS programs. UNLV (69), North Dakota State (86) and Nevada (97) are the only Mountain West programs currently ahead of the Cowboys. San Jose State (102), New Mexico (104), Hawaii (110), Northern Illinois (116), UTEP (138) and Air Force (N/A) round out the conference rankings.
