On Friday night, April 30, 2021, a woman went out to walk her dogs; her boyfriend came home to only the dogs and went searching for the woman.

It was a tragic incident involving a 39-year-old woman, a 10-year-old bear, and two yearling bears ending up dead.

According to Denver7, Colorado Parks & Wildlife released a statement regarding the attack.

It seems the woman went to take her two dogs for a walk when the attack occurred. Her boyfriend had come home and found the dogs, but the woman was missing. The boyfriend found her body and called the authorities.

The La Plata County Sheriff's Department along with Colorado Parks & Wildlife investigated, looking for a bear, as it was clearly a bear attack judging by the bear skat and hair that was present.

They used dogs to down the nearby suspected female bear and two yearlings, which were promptly euthanized for the public's safety.


Necropsies, performed by colorado Parks & Wildlife has a lab in Fort Collins, discovered human remains in the bears; a lab in Laramie will be investigating the bears' DNA.

The release from Colorado Parks & Wildlife only listed three bear attacks that lead to death in the past 50 years; the most recent before the April 30, 2021, attack was in 2009 in Ouray.
