The Cheyenne City Council on Monday night passed a resolution naming the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens Grand Conservatory the Shane Smith Grand Conservatory.

Smith, the founding director of the Cheyenne Botanic Gardens, retired last March after 40 years of service.

Under his leadership, the Gardens completed numerous award-winning projects, including the Paul Smith's Children's Village, the Women's Civic League Peace Garden, the Rotary Century Plaza, the Bedont Rose Garden, the Bobbi Hathaway Garden Labyrinth and the Reckling Herb Garden.

"I honestly think this is the least we can do for Shane," said Councilman Bryan Cook.  "It's really an honor to not only Shane, but the staff and volunteers that he was able to cultivate over all of his years leading the Botanic Gardens."

"I can't think of anyone that has done as much as city employee," said Councilman Pete Laybourn.  "It's really taken our Lions Park and this program to a pretty amazing level for a city this size."
